Ballykeel Together – #A4ANI funded.

July 26, 2016

Ballykeel 1 Moving Forward Community Group recently received £9,489 from Awards for All.

Nathan Gilmore, Vice Chairperson of the group tells us how they are using the funding.

We received our funding from Awards for All a few months ago and have already organised a few events.

Estate clean ups

We bought equipment to allow us to clean up Ballykeel 1 estate. We have done three clean up days so far which have made the place look much neater and tidier. We have already received emails from residents congratulating us on our efforts and how they are proud to live in a tidy estate.

Somme Heritage Trip

On the 25th June a bus load of residents went and visited the Somme Heritage centre in Newtownards. There was a good mixture of young and old people who visited the centre. It was great to see older members of the community get the satisfaction that they wanted by reliving some of their past or past that relations where involved in. Residents have already been asking us to organise another outing.

Brekkie Club

The brekkie club for the community has been running now for just over 10 weeks. Residents can call into our community centre and get some breakfast and cup of tea or coffee. This part of our project also sees a good mixture of young and old being involved and it is very popular.

Somme Mural

On the 1st July 2016 our group unveiled a new mural at the front of the Ballykeel 1 estate. The main reason was to have something within the estate that remembered the sacrifice given by the men and women in previous wars and battles. Around 100 people attended the unveiling of the mural, which included residents, Councillors, the mayor, community representatives and war veterans who had served in different regiments.

We are pleased at how things are going and would like to thank the Big Lottery Fund for helping us to achieve our goals. We look forward to the next few months of activities.
