HERe NI supports lesbian and bisexual women and their families. They are using the £2,000 Big Lottery Fund 10th Birthday grant to run peer support groups in the community.
Through the groups, the women take part in a range of healthy social activities and workshops that are helping to decrease social isolation, raising visibility levels and increasing their emotional and physical health, and confidence levels.
Project Coordinator Cara McCann said the women reported an increase in confidence to cope with every day life. She said it has also made many women more open about their sexual orientation, which brings with it less stress.
People who have taken part have commented on the project:
“HERe NI has the personal touch to make everyone feel extremely welcome – for some women it is not easy to acknowledge being lesbian.”
“The support I received from HERe NI when I was coming out was remarkable – at that time I was in a dark place.”
“The peer support group and various events helped me to make new friends and become more confident around other people.”
