With just a few days to go to World Mental Health Day on Friday 10th October, it’s hard to believe that it was just a year ago that the Together For You project was launched. To say that a lot has happened in that year would be a huge understatement.
Along with recruiting staff, building websites and publishing newsletters, most importantly of all, Together For You’s services are already making a difference to people in need. So far over 8,600 people in Northern Ireland have benefited from the project, and that number rises every day. That is 8,600 people more likely to talk about their mental health to others, to seek help when they suffer mental Ill-health and to contribute to reducing the stigma surrounding mental ill-health.
With statistics showing that one in four people in Northern Ireland will encounter some form of mental ill-health in their lifetime, one year into the project, we want to build on that momentum.
Again, using the back drop of World Mental Health Day, we decided to put together an event to celebrate, educate and promote mental health and wellbeing. It takes place this Thursday, 9th October (the eve of World Mental Health Day) in CastleCourt Shopping Centre in Belfast and will offer people the chance to learn about all the various ways they can look after their mental health. People can drop down any time between 10.30am and 7pm for a taste of some fun activities around subjects like diet and exercise, complimentary therapies and arts and music. It is also a chance to tell people more about Together For You’s services, and to talk to them about their mental health, and ultimately start to break down the stigma that still plagues the subject.
I’m really looking forward to taking part in some of the fun activities on the day, working with all our partners who have also volunteered their time to help out at CastleCourt and speaking to members of the public about our fantastic project.
Together For You, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, aims to deliver mental health and wellbeing services to a range of people across Northern Ireland in a joined-up way.
The free drop-in event includes a cookery demo in the morning, pedal powered smoothie makers in the afternoon and complementary therapies in the evening. For more details for the event, which is in CastleCourt on Thursday 9th October from 10.30am to 7pm, see www.togetherforyou.org.uk/news/view/mental-health-and-wellbeing-promotion.
